CLUB HUMOROUS AND
TABLE TOPICS COMPETITION 2012
New S@A Glenn
called the meeting to order and opened the meeting before handing over to Club
President Philip for a General Welcome
and an overview of the evening’s proceedings.
The evening was not as well attended as recent gatherings
and there was a bit of a struggle to fill all the Judges, S@As, Counters and
Timing roles.
The meeting was then placed in the hands of Area Governor
Brett acting as Chief Judge for his outline of the Competition Rules.
The Contestants for the Humorous Speech Contest then drew
cards for their speaking order being; Daniel, Mark and John.
Toastmaster for the Humorous Contest was President Philip.
Daniel presented a speech entitled: “Why Bother – Calm Down”
in which Daniel provided a personal obsession with following the NRL football
code and the emotional rollercoaster that can involve following his team – the West Tigers. Daniel used the attire he was wearing to explain how his passion has enveloped
him in the acquisition of merchandise as well.
Mark presented a speech entitled: “Don’t Miss the Obvious”
in which Mark reminisced a number hilarious occasions where he had indeed missed the
obvious including innocently causing excruciating pain to one of his children
as a mere infant through to a hugely embarrassing case of mistaken anatomical
identity following and excessive celebration. Some very humorous anecdotes with a meaty message.
John presented a speech entitled: “So You Don’t Believe in
Aliens” in which John described some of the more unusual traditional nuances of
Japanese Culture following numerous trips and home stays in the country. These
included personal phopars with exchanging Business Cards, describing “real’
home cooked Japanese breakfasts and touching on the technology of their toilets and the
extraordinary experience of the public baths.
Following the Counters leaving the room Toastmaster Philip conducted brief Interviews with the Contestants
while handing out Participation
Certificates.
Then after a short break Toastmaster Daniel handed the Table Topics part of the Competition
over to Chief Judge Area Governor, Brett for his outline of the Competition
Rules.
The Contests then drew for Speaking Order; including; Glen H,
Kimberley, John, Meghan, Glenn D, Ua and Daniel D. (Editor’s apologies if that order is
not exactly correct or if I have omitted someone).
The topic selected by Area Governor Brett was: “If you could
solve one societal problem, what would it be?”
A great diversity of angles of the topics were addressed and presented in
a variety of ways.
Once the Counters had left the room Toastmaster Daniel
conducted some brief Interviews.
Then came the announcement of the Winners by Club President Philip:
In the Humorous Contest because there were only 3
contestants it is traditional to only announce the Winner of the Club Humorous
Contest for 2012 and the new holder of the Tony Spragg Trophy for Humorous
Speech – John.
In the Table Topics Contest; Third place was Kimberley,
Runner Up was John and the Winner of the Club Table Topics for 2012 is Glen H.
Following formal presentations Philip delivered the
Presidents Closing Remarks paying tribute to the Contestants and those who had
participated in the running of the evening.
