CONCORD WEST TOASTMASTERS MEETING No: 1123 – Tuesday 13th March 2012

AREA 6 INTERNATIONAL SPEECH AND EVALUATION CONTEST
In place of our ordinary Club Meeting Concord West Club was impressively represented at the Area 6 Annual International & Evaluation Speech Contest held this year at the Burwood RSL.
Contestants representing the 6 Toastmasters Clubs in our Area: along with Concord West Club there was Burwood Club (as Host), Burwood Telecom, Burwood Railcorp, Smooth Speech Club and Yaralla Toastmasters Club.
There were 6 Speakers in the International Speech and in order we heard from:
  1. Ann Eyres (BC) with a speech entitled: “Phone Call”
  2. Ken Moore (BT) with a speech entitled: “Hoarding”
  3. Michael Brunac (SS) with a speech entitled: “Sounds of Silence”
  4. Simon Sykes (YC) with a speech entitled: “Heart Problems”
  5. Greg May (BRC) with a speech entitled: “Solar Power”
  6. Daniel Tucker (CW) with a (fabulous) speech entitled: “Why Can’t It Be You?”

After a break with light refreshments we were reconvened for the Evaluation Contest.
Following a well-written speech presented by a novice from a Club outside our Area the Evaluators presented their impressions, praise and points for improvement.
This time our Concord West representative was first of 5 speakers off the blocks;
  1. Chris Scheuber (CW)
  2. Daniel Quach (BRC)
  3. Simon Sykes (YC)
  4. Michael Brunac (SS)
  5. Phill Lovell (BC)

While the judges were preparing their number we had a Raffle Draw with one of our Members (Mark) taking out the best of the available prizes on offer.
There was to have been a special presentation to the Club with the strongest representation at the meeting, which Concord West would have won hands down outnumbering representation by other Clubs by 2 or 3 to 1. (Well-done guys).
Daniel receiving his Trophies and Certificate for First Place in the  Area 6 International Speech and
Chris his Runner Up Certificate for the Area 6 Evaluation from Division Governor Michael Said
With the announcement of the Winners by Division Governor, Michael Said, it was revealed that Chris had taken out the position of Runner Up in the Area 6 Evaluation Contest and Daniel had taken out First place in the Area 6 International Speech Contest. Well done to both Contestants of whom we are suitably proud.
Daniel goes on to now represent Area 6 (and Concord West) at the Phillip Division Contest on Saturday 28th April at the Bankstown Trotting Club. (More details will be forthcoming).
Daniel along with Concord West Club strongly encourages all Members to try and attend this function and give Daniel every support in this endeavour.
Concord West Club has taken out first place in the Area 6 Contest every year now for 5 years and sent representatives to this Division Contest. This could be the year we have a representative go onto District. Be there for Daniel.

CLUB INTERNATIONAL
SPEECH AND EVALUATION CONTEST

The 3 Contestants for the International Speech drew for Speaking position and Daniel, Mark and Dai Fei was the final order.
Meghan was Toastmaster for the International Speech Contest and carried out her duties with great aplomb.

Daniel presented a Speech entitled: ‘Why Can’t It Be You’ in which Daniel explored the challenges of stuttering and how barriers can be broken down if one is prepared to have a go.

Mark presented a Speech entitled: ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Water’ in which he gave a superbly succinct endorsement for not just joining but really getting involved in Toastmasters but jumping in the deep-end.

Dai Fei presented a Speech entitled: ‘Success Through Self Belief” in which she relayed a highly emotional and deeply personal struggle to overcome adversity and setbacks and with persistence to emerge triumphant.

These 3 excellent speeches were a true testimony to the caliber of our Club’s Membership.

Toastmaster Meghan made presentations for Participation whilst the Judges were out calculating the results.

International Speech Contestants: Mark, Daniel and Dai Fei
We were joined at this point by Area Governor Vanessa who took on the role of Toastmaster for the Evaluation Contest.

The Evaluation Contestants then drew for speaking order and the Toastmaster welcomed our Guest Target Speaker Alex Cameron from Burwood Club.
Alex gave a highly informative and insightful speech entitled; “Is the Great Political Speech Dead?” in which he both reminisced the great speeches of the past and challenged us to consider the value of great political rhetoric.

The Evaluation Contestants were then accompanied out of the room by the S@A and had 5 minutes to compile their thoughts before being accompanied back to the room one by one – in order to present their feedback.
We witnessed 5 very different styles but all very much attune to the same issues in relation to Alex’s Speech from Glen, Natasha, Daniel and Chris.

Toastmaster Vanessa then presented their Certificates of Participation while the Counters and Chief Judge tallied up the Scores.
Chairman Brett handed the meeting to President John as Chief Judge who then announced the Winners.

In the Evaluation Contest, Chris was the Winner while Natasha was announced as the Runner Up.
In the International Speech because there were only 3 Contestants it is protocol to only announce the Winner and that mantle went to Daniel on this occasion and Certificates were duly presented to the Winners.
