CONCORD WEST TOASTMASTERS CLUB – 26th March 2013

S@A John called the meeting to order and handed the meeting over to President Philip for his general Welcome.

Chairman for the first half of the Meeting was Melanie in her first undertaking of the role. Visitors included: Martin, Merinda, Deborah, Aaron and Catherine.
Apologies had been received from; Glen H, Kimberley, Ua, Mark and Bernard.

Reading of the Mission of the Club was undertaken by Nick and Grammarian Heather put the Word Exuberant into the mix.

Introductions took on a simple open theme permitting a briefer slab of the time-slot.
John was Toastmaster for the first half introducing Lyndal with a speech entitled: “Change we Can Believe In”.
Philip was Lyndal’s Evaluator.

Table Topics was agin moved into the first half of the meeting and chaired by Melanie and focused responses around Bob Dylan Lyrics. A very unusual and highly successful concept.
The Evaluators; Paul and Daniel provided some very helpful assistance in their analysis of a diversity of presentations.

The first half was then Evaluated by Meghan outlining the progress thus far.

VPE Meghan called the meeting back to order and invited members to say hello to someone they had not yet met properly, as a way breaking the ice, before assuming the role of Chairman for the second half of the meeting.
Toastmaster for the second session was John who introduced 2 Speakers;

Paul with a speech entitled “What is Delft?” in which Paul revealed a little known aspect of his ‘collecting’ of the miniature porcelain houses handed out by KLM Airlines – called Delft. Paul described their origins and gave us an intriguing insight into his own collection complete with photos and real containing the famous Dutch young jenever, distilled by Bols Distilleries.

Heather then presented a riveting speech in which she had us all believing the Club was closing down. Unfortunately due to Toastmaster responsibilities the Editor has mislayed the title of the speech.
The Evaluators were Glenn D and Philip.

Helen delivered a seasonal Toast based around the Easter Break.

We then moved into our normal round of Evaluation duties;
Ums and Ahs Count was recorded by Heather.
Grammarian and Word of the Day were duly noted by Heather.
The Timers Report was delivered by Mudhi.

AREA 6 – INTERNATIONAL SPEECH & EVALUATION CONTEST – 16th MARCH 2013

Immediate Past President John (on behalf of Club President Philip who is competing) called the meeting to order at 1:00pm and handed over to Area Governor Brett for his Welcome.
Once the Judges, Time Keepers and Contestants had been briefed the Speaking order was drawn and announced and the Contest began.

Kamal delivered a speech on Lying
Philip delivered his speech entitled; “A Ball of String”
And Ken delivered a anecdote on Cruise holidays.

S@A John and District Governor Alex and Counters Paul and Glenn D left the room with Judges scores and Toastmaster Peter wrapped up the session by presenting the Participation Certificates. As all 3 contestants are represented in the Evaluation Contest no interviews were undertaken.

S@A John announced the Break and had to hastily arrange for the food to be delivered earlier than planned.

Following a pleasant Break with refreshments, S@A John reconvened the meeting and introduced Phil From Burwood Club to officiate as Toastmaster for the Evaluation Contest.
Phil Lovell introduced the Target Speaker – Wendel Drego – with a speech about Time, which ended on a very dramatic note as the audience was showered in Minties.

Once Wendel had finished S@A John escorted the 4 contestants to an upstairs Boardroom where they had 5 minutes to prepare their responses.

The Editor was S@A so not in a position to hear the responses from Kamal, Philip, Kenneth and Andrew.

While the Chief Judge and Counters took leave tally the results Toastmaster Phil conducted the Contestant Interviews.

Following some official announcements the Chief Judge and Division Governor Alex Thomas and Area Governor Brett Sutcliffe announced the Winners of both Contests and presented the Certificates and trophies.

As there were only 3 Contestants no Third Place or Runner Up is announced.
Evaluation Contest Third Place – Kamal
Evaluation Contest Runner Up – Andrew
Evaluation Contest Winner – Philip

It can be noted that this is the second time in just 2 Area 6 Competitions that a single Concord West Contestant has won both categories in 2 successive Speech Contests.
The 2012 Humorous & Table Topics late last year and now the 2013 International and Evaluation Contest.
It is now onto Division!

CONCORD WEST TOASTMASTERS CLUB – 12th March 2013

S@A John called the meeting to order and briefly explained the reason behind the very different seating arrangements which for tonight’s meeting were set up in a theatre style set up similar to the Area Competition format. Before handing the meeting over to President Philip for his general Welcome.

Chairman for the first half of the Meeting was Meghan who explained a little more about the reasons behind mixing up the format for variation.
Visitors included; Nick, Henry, Jasmine and Nick returning for his second visit.
Apologies had been received from; Glen H, Marlowe, Dai Fei, Farzard and Tiffany.

Reading of the Mission of the Club was undertaken by Samuel and Grammarian Mark challenged us with both the Word and/or examples of Oxymorons.

Introductions took on a simple open theme permitting a briefer slab of the time-slot.
Mark was Toastmaster for the first half introducing Philip to deliver a dry run of his International Speech “A Ball of String” in preparation for the upcoming Area 6 Competition.
Many longer-term members were startled to see Philip use notes for his practice run, but as Philip’s official Evaluator John pointed out that Philip had been making a significant number albeit minor changes to the text of the speech, since the last performance and the notes were necessary for recall. As a result John focused primarily on issues requiring improvement before the Evaluation was opened to the entire meeting to provide solid advice to Philip.

With another deviation from the norm, we then had Table Topics chaired by Heather on the theme of James Bond, or at least topics centred around numerous James Bond movie titles. Yet another very creative Table topic challenge that highlighted a somewhat unexpected generational gap, but producing some excellent responses.
The Evaluators; Meghan and Lyndal provided some very helpful assistance in their analysis of a diversity of presentations.

The first half was then Evaluated by Glenn D in a succinct analysis of the meeting thus far.

S@A John called the meeting back to order right on time and handed to Chairman for the second half – Peter.
Kymberly was challenged to deliver a Toast in the new seating environment where few if any members had a glass let alone a full glass but had us both Toast (and use) ‘Our Imaginations’.
Toastmaster for the second session was John who introduced 3 Speakers;

Helen with her second speech entitled “The Kokoda Challenge” recounting a real life experience of doing this very specific and arduous trek in the hinterland behind Surfers Paradise. Describing the personal and team challenges she had met and managed.
Meghan presented her 9th speech from the CC Manual – Persuade – with a speech entitled “What a Dreadful Problem to Have…”, in she provided a view from both sides of the coin in dealing with issues and how many issues pale into insignificance when compared to others.
Finally brand new member Edna delivered a stunning Ice Breaker Speech entitled; “Starting a New Life in a New Country”. To get some idea of the quality of this first ever presentation, in thanking Edna, John asked the meeting rhetorically in jest “Can we just check to ensure that was Edna’s first speech. An excellent and confident delivery without notes providing an insight the changes and adaptations required to up-route from a life you know and venture half way round the world and start afresh.

We then moved into our normal round of Evaluation duties;
Ums and Ahs Count was recorded by Heather.
Grammarian and Word of the Day were duly noted by Mark.
The Big Ears challenge was undertaken for the first time by Mudhi at very short notice
Paul V kept track of the Timing for the evening.
Kimberly followed up with a very succinct second-half General Evaluation

All Visitors provided very supportive feedback in the Guests Comments before President Philip presented his Closing Remarks and endorsed the upcoming Area 6 International and Evaluation Contest.
